Day 11 – A Book You Hated

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

I hated it. Not just the fact that Atticus turned out to be a disappointing racist, but the whole book felt choppy and disjointed, like it was just several childhood anecdotes rather than one coherent story. It also just felt like Harper Lee was just trying to make sense of her own feelings towards her father.

And I still maintain that this was simply the first draft of ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ and that Harper Lee’s lawyer took advantage of her. There’s the glaring discontinuity of Tom Robinson’s court case (in ‘Go Set A Watchman’, there’s a throwaway line that Atticus won, when we know that didn’t happen) and there were so many phrases that were used in ‘Go Set A Watchman’ that were quoted word for word in Harper Lee’s Magnun Opus.
